How to Choose the Perfect Fire Table for Your Outdoor Space

A fire table can completely change the character of an outdoor seating area. It provides a place around which people naturally gather, introduces the movement and warmth of a real flame and, when designed well, still performs the everyday role of an outdoor table.

That makes choosing one rather different from choosing a traditional fire pit. Start with the furniture around it

The fire table should be planned with the seating, not added after the furniture has already been positioned. Begin by looking at the dimensions of your outdoor sofa or lounge arrangement, then mark the proposed fire-table footprint on the ground. Guests need to be able to sit comfortably, reach the table and move around the arrangement without the space feeling cramped.

A larger table can work beautifully with generous modular seating because its visual weight matches the furniture around it. In a more compact setting, the same table may dominate the terrace. Allow for circulation as well as the dimensions printed on a product page.

Think about usable table space

One of the main advantages of a fire table is that it can do more than provide a flame. Look at how much usable surface surrounds the burner and whether the central fire area can be covered when it is not in use.

The Cannes Fire Table, for example, has a broad glass-fibre reinforced concrete surround for drinks and small plates and is supplied with an aluminium lid that converts the central fire area into additional table space. That matters if the table will be used throughout the day rather than only after dark.

The Monte Carlo Fire Table follows a similar square format but uses striking blue fire glass, while the Positano Fire Table offers another contemporary interpretation. The right choice is therefore partly about proportion and partly about which finish sits most naturally with the furniture and materials already in the garden.

Make the flame part of the design

A fire table is visually strongest when the flame feels integral to the outdoor room. Consider what sits behind it when viewed from the house, how it relates to the lines of the sofa and whether surrounding lighting supports rather than competes with it.

Subtle outdoor lighting can work particularly well. The fire remains the focal point at seating level while softer lighting provides enough illumination for paths, planting and the wider terrace. The objective is atmosphere, not turning the garden into a brightly lit indoor room.

Understand the heat it provides

A flame inevitably contributes warmth, but a fire table should not automatically be treated as a substitute for targeted outdoor heating. Its strongest role is often local warmth and atmosphere for people gathered around it.

Fuel and everyday operation

Our current fire tables use gas and provide an adjustable flame, so operation is straightforward once the table has been set up correctly. The Cannes, Monte Carlo and Positano models each have a 16kW / 55,000 BTU rated output and are compatible with natural-gas conversion using the appropriate kit.

Before choosing a position, think about where the fuel will sit, how it will be accessed and what the manufacturer's instructions require around clearances and ventilation. Do not design the furniture so tightly around the table that routine access becomes awkward.

Wind and shelter

All three models include a glass windscreen around the fire area, but the wider setting still matters. A very exposed terrace can make almost any flame feature less comfortable to sit around. Observe the prevailing wind before deciding exactly where the lounge zone should go.

Style the whole lounge area, not just the table

A fire table becomes more convincing when its material and scale are echoed elsewhere. Contemporary aluminium furniture, neutral outdoor fabrics and restrained accessories allow the flame to provide movement and warmth without the setting becoming visually busy.

Plan for Autumn and the shoulder seasons

Fire tables become especially appealing as the evenings cool. In Autumn, the objective is often not to recreate midsummer conditions but to make a clear, calm evening inviting enough to stay outside longer. A flame, comfortable seating and well-planned lighting can change how the same terrace feels once the sun has gone down.

For more exposed spaces or occasions where warmth matters more than ambience, an infrared heater may still be the better solution. For a lounge setting where gathering around the flame is part of the experience, a fire table earns its place in a different way.

The right fire table should work even when it is off

Perhaps the best test is to imagine the table without a flame. Does its scale suit the seating? Is there useful surface area? Does the material work with the rest of the garden? Can people move around it comfortably? If the answers are yes, the fire feature becomes an enhancement to an already well-planned outdoor room rather than the only reason the table is there.

Start by exploring our fire tables alongside the lounge furniture you are considering, then plan the two as a single composition. That usually produces a much more resolved space than choosing either one independently.
