A pergola is the single biggest change you can make to how much of the year a garden gets used. Not because of the shade, because of the rain. A louvered roof that closes turns a terrace from weather-dependent into somewhere you can plan around.

Manual operation is reliable, cheaper and perfectly adequate if the pergola is somewhere you pass daily. Electric earns its cost when the structure is large, when the roof is out of easy reach, or when you want it to close automatically in rain. Freestanding or wall-mounted.

A wall-mounted pergola uses the house for one side, which reduces cost and visual bulk but ties the position to the building. Freestanding structures can be sited wherever the garden works best. Plan the base first. Pergolas need a level, load-bearing foundation. Establish this before ordering, not after. Retrofitting a base under a delivered structure is the expensive way round.
